Harwich means military settlement in Old English, and it has often been a stronghold against invasions, including from William of Orange in 1688. The Royal Navy is no longer located at Harwich, although there are still regular ferries to Holland and Denmark from nearby Parkeston. The whole of the older medieval part of Harwich has been designated a "conservation area", although there is only one Grade I listed building - the Guildhall built in 1769.
